Trump wants Russian Federation back in the G7, contradicting his own campaign

The call threatens to further strain what was shaping up to be a tough summit for the G7, whose members have also been clashing with the Trump administration over a looming trade war.

Macron called on other G7 leaders not to water down a joint communique at the end of the summit, at the expense of shared values, simply in an effort to win Trump's signature, warning that a "G6 plus one" outcome was possible. Russian Federation has never turned its back on the G8 (now G7), Vladimir Putin said, speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

That comment has Trump squarely offside with this fellow G7 leaders, including Canada, who view Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and its meddling in western elections as a major global security concern.

But all the leaders did endorse Mr. Trump's historic denuclearization talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore next week.

The French and Canadian leaders have each vowed to address the tariffs with Trump at the summit.
