"The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow", Trump said in a statement.

But with the Eagles, the team had "already sent in dozens and dozens of officials and players to come for the celebration and then that number was reduced", said Conway.

The ensuing backlash has forced Fox News into an apology, and on Tuesday afternoon Wallace issued an apology.

In Trump's statement and subsequent tweets, the President indicated that members of the team chose to refrain from going to the White House because of his comments on the NFL's national anthem policy.

Trump claimed the cancelation was related to players protesting his stance on kneeling during the national anthem. ESPN's Adam Schefter said that many players, including a majority of the black players, opted not to go.

It should be noted that he didn't take a knee or remain in the locker room, which are the forms of "disrespect" during the anthem that President Donald Trump mentioned in his statement when he rescinded the Eagles' invitation to the White House. "Just sad, I feel like you guys should have to be better than this". A source close to the players told CBS News that fewer than 10 players committed the attending the White House event.

Both James and Curry backed Hillary Clinton for the presidency when she ran against Trump in 2016. It also touched on their supposed proclivity for kneeling during the anthem - which nobody on the team did during the regular season or postseason - Goodell or the National Football League have yet to comment on the situation or come out in support of the Eagles or any players.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said this episode "only proves that our President is not a true patriot, but a fragile egomaniac".

Don't be late: "I will be there at 3:00 p.m. with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus to celebrate America", he said.

However, CBS News reported that no Eagles player stayed in the locker room during the national anthem.

According to the White House, the team notified the White House that 81 individuals from the team would attend the event together with more than 1,000 Philadelphia Eagles fans.
