Thiem steamrolls into maiden grand slam final

"I am a human person", Nadal said following his 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory.

Thiem has been in complete control of every match this tournament and is playing some of his most consistent tennis of his life, as he's now in the final for the third time in his last four events.

Del Potro has a torrid time with injuries in recent years and the last 12 months have seen the Argentine trying to recapture the form that took him to his first and only Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2009.

Only Dominic Thiem stands in the way of Nadal and what seems an inevitable 11th Roland Garros title after a straight-sets pummelling of Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-final. For me it's incredible.

"I couldn't play my best because of him", said del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion.

"I can not believe it now", Karin Thiem, a tennis coach, told a group of reporters.

Nadal's backhand was doing most of the damage, with three winners having set up the double break on his way to a two-set lead, and Del Potro was broken to love in his first serve game of the third, with Nadal inflicting a devastating backhand victor up the flank after another majestic defence.

As if the task was not daunting enough for Thiem, the early signs were even more ominous.

Surely, so did del Potro.

Thiem survived two tough sets against Marco Cecchinato before cruising through the third for a 7-5, 7-6, 6-1 success.

In the first all-American Roland Garros semi-final since 2002, the 10th-seeded Stephens stayed composed throughout as Keys, who has not won a set against her in three meetings, peppered the court with unforced errors.

Timeline of Donald Trump's war of words (and trade) with Justin Trudeau
Former prime minister Brian Mulroney predicts Donald Trump's unprecedented diatribe against Justin Trudeau is a passing storm. Trudeau said he would continue to stand up for Canadian dairy producers and the country's supply management system.

United Nations shuttle diplomacy aims to avert assault on vital Yemen port
He warned that the Saudi-led coalition - which is waging an air war in Yemen - will retaliate in time. The conflict has left almost 10,000 people dead in Yemen, already the Arab world's poorest country.

The final many called when the draws were made has come to fruition as 10-time French Open victor, Rafael Nadal, goes up against first-time finalist, Dominic Thiem, in Sunday's final.

For Thiem, however, the challenge will be to go one step further as all his victories so far have been in three setters.

" If I lost that tie-break it would have been a very close match I think and I didn't want that".

(My) level is very good at the moment (and) I am very, very happy. I always hear from players that in a match they will do it differently, but if you don't practice that way, you are not going to do it in the heat of the battle.

Caty McNally and Cori Gauff will meet in an all-American girls' final at the French Open after winning their semifinals. However, I'm going to be aggressive and have a small bet on Thiem winning 3-0, now available at around [20.00].

Cecchinato's nerves settled and the Sicilian unleashed some trademark backhand winners but Thiem had too much pace and power.

This was not the case during the first two tight sets between the Thiem and Cecchinato. The Austrian looked very assured against Alexander Zverev as well as Cecchinato.

Two breaks later Nadal was in a familiar position, serving for the title, and when another Thiem forehand dropped long, his arms were raised in celebration, yet again.

"They are the first set is everything, and the weather is everything".

While Thiem faces an nearly impossible task on Sunday, Nadal was taking nothing for granted against the man who beat him in Madrid.

Nadal saved three break points at 1-all in the opening set and another three at 4-all.
