Trump, Kim confident but body language reveals nerves at first meeting

The US President, who is more than twice Kim's age, then appeared to lead the way to the library where they held a one-on-one meeting, placing his hand on the North Korean leader's counterpart's back.

He has said he would size up Kim "within the first minute" of their meeting.

Mr Trump and Mr Kim sit down with their respective delegations for the US-North Korea summit, following a private discussion that kicked off the historic meeting between the leaders.

Singapore is a short flight from North Korea for Kim Jong Un, and until recently, North Koreans could travel there visa-free for such luxuries as shopping, and sophisticated medical care.

"We had a really fantastic meeting, a lot of progress, very positive", Trump said.

Moon, the son of North Korean war refugees, took office previous year promising to seek engagement with the North only to be stymied by rising tensions amid a steady drumbeat of North Korean missile tests and saber rattling by Pyongyang and Washington.

Secretary of State Pompeo said Monday that negotiations with the North Koreans were "moving quite rapidly", and the USA anticipated they would "come to their logical conclusion even more quickly than we had anticipated". "We'll have to see the concrete steps that North Korea takes", she said.

"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says. "Both the American as well as the North Koreans are pleased with the arrangements, we're all set to go and things will start happening within the next 24 hours".
