Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters: "There is great meaning in Chairman Kim's clearly confirming to President Trump the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

The meeting on Tuesday between the United States president and North Korea's leader, unthinkable until recent months and uncertain until June 1, is a high-stakes and politically risky venture into summit diplomacy by two unpredictable personalities who have famously exchanged personal insults and threats of war.

"India welcomes the US - DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) Summit held in Singapore".

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula".

Japan's leader said, "I support the signing of the agreement confirming leader Kim Jong-un's commitment towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula as a first step towards resolving various issues".

"I want to see the President succeed", she said, "but a handshake is no substitute for a binding, verifiable deal". "He had a lot to do with us being here today", said Trump.

The Trump-Kim summit, unthinkable just a few months ago, is yet more vindication of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence where the capacity and threat to inflict pain augments the force of diplomacy, and can prompt "rogue" regimes to display a strong survival instinct.

If Mattis was aware that Trump was going to announce a suspension of military exercises, he apparently did not share that information with the South Koreans or with the military organization most directly affected: U.S. Forces Korea.

"The denuclearisation pledge is diluted from the Six-Party Talks provision, and there was no mention of North Korea moving towards CVID as the administration had hinted at", Dr Bruce Klingner, senior research fellow for North-east Asia at U.S. think-tank The Heritage Foundation, told The Straits Times.

But the chances of North Korea successfully emulating the Vietnam model are "slim", according to a team of economists at Capital Economics led by Gareth Leather. The Singapore summit proved a landmark victory for both.

Trump expressed his intention to halt U.S. The senator added that because of Trump's comments referring to the end of the exercises, "that's why I said there needs to be some clarification". The South Korean military seemed similarly surprised. Instead, they specifically deplored his decision to suspend certain joint military exercises with South Korea in exchange for a vague, nonbinding written promise that North Korea would work toward denuclearization. In front of a throng of clicking, flashing cameras aimed by some of the 2,500 reporters who had traveled to the island of Sentosa to cover the summit, Trump and Kim strode out from opposite flanks of a red-carpeted stage, met in the middle, and shook hands for about 10 seconds.

Trump's supporters, who relish his unconventional diplomatic style, are likely to hail the summit as a foreign policy win for the president over one of America's most bitter long-time foes even as he feuds with Washington's closest allies after leaving an economic summit in Canada in disarray over the weekend.
