President Trump unloaded on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week; slamming the "meek and mild" leader after he publicly criticized Trump's decision to slap hefty tariffs on his nation's exports. And chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betrayal and stabbing Trump in the back. "I'm unconcerned about our capacity to continue to do what we need to do".

The tariffs, as well as Trump's noted opposition to multilateralism, his criticism of Canadian trade barriers and suggestion that the union become the G8 with the inclusion of Russian Federation made for a chaotic lead into the G7 summit.

In reality, the United States has a small surplus with Canada when goods and services are considered - $341.2 billion to Canada's $325.9 billion, according to 2016 statistics from the USA trade representative. The president also repeated claims that Canada overtaxes American dairy products under its supply management system and complained about Canadian automobiles flooding the USA market.

"It would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory tariffs measures on July 1 applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us".

"He really stabbed us in the back".

Prime Minister Trudeau on the other hand, did not balk at the statements but instead remained professional and mature - which is to be expected from a leader of one of the most respected and democratic countries in the world.
