Julen Lopetegui has been removed as Spain manager a day after it emerged that he had agreed to take over at Real Madrid after the World Cup.

"The Spanish football federation asks for the maximum respect in order to maintain a sense of normalcy around the national team as it is about to debut in the World Cup", the federation said in a statement.

"The federation can not be left outside the negotiation of one of its employees, and find out just five minutes before a public announcement", Rubiales said. "We have been compelled to act".

"I know it's a very hard situation".

"What you get...will have to do with the work you've developed", said Spanish football chief Rubiales at the press conference.

"The players have seen things like this before and I am sure they are going to have a good World Cup".

"There's a lot to do".

Fifty-one year old Lopetegui is due to take over at European Champions Real Madrid next month after Zinedine Zidane, who led the Spanish club to three successive Champions League titles, stepped down last month.

World Cup 2026 awarded to USA, Canada and Mexico
Three US territories - Guam, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - were among the other member nations to not vote. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015.

An hour after that, the RFEF then posted their own reaction as they announced that Real would have to pay the €2 million release clause for Lopetegui, who had just signed a new long-term contract with La Roja on May 22 .

For the first time since 2006, there are more players from Madrid in a Spanish squad for a major tournament, with a six-strong Real contingent and just Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets from Barca.

The appointment also adds an interesting dynamic to Spain's opening World Cup match on Friday.

"Obviously there was some sort of problem with communication but we can't be expected to find out about something like this five minutes and not take the necessary decisions".

"We had to react, I know that whatever I do I will be criticized, I accept that".

"I think Rubiales acted correctly and was looking out for the federation, which should be above any single individual", Hernandez told sports daily Marca.

This was a shocker, just two days ahead of Spain's Group B opener against Portugal in Sochi.

Spain left for the World Cup in Russian Federation free of distractions and with high hopes of competing for the title it won in 2010.
