1 deputy shot dead, another critically injured when inmate overpowered them

Wyandotte County sheriff's spokeswoman Major Kelli Bailiff said the suspect was also injured in the shooting and was having surgery performed, via the Associated Press.

Authorities say one sheriff's deputy is dead and another is critically wounded after they were overcome by an inmate while driving a transport vehicle near the Wyandotte County courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas.

Witnesses said they feared for their own lives.

Kansas City police are investigating both incidents.

The surviving deputy, a female, remains in critical condition, according to Bailiff.

King, 44, died from her injuries shortly after midnight on Saturday. A suspect was also shot and taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Kansas City police officer Zac Blair said. Authorities say they are not searching for any other suspects at this time.

Police said at about 5 p.m. officers were called to the scene where two men were fighting over a golf cart and a gun.

The shooting occurred outside the courthouse annex, near the area where inmates are transported.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Police say two Wyandotte County sheriff's deputies have been shot near the county courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas.

The woman with the sword was shot after barricading herself in a shed for hours, officials said.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died. He had seven years of service as an officer. Investigators said the inmate may have grabbed a weapon from one of the deputies during a struggle after he got out of a van transporting him late Friday morning.

Witnesses were being interviewed, she said.

The shooting happened before 11:17 a.m. Friday near the corner of 8th Street and Ann Avenue.

It also appeared that the police blocked off a street near the courthouse with a barricade.

Kansas City, Kansas, police have taken over the investigation.

"Sending prayers to the officers, families and Wyandotte SO", the office said.
