The hospital's annual meeting is also an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments of the past year and offer a heartfelt thank you to staff and volunteers, as well as the many partners, donors and community members dedicated to reducing stigma associated with mental illness.

Experts state that building your own safety net, having real conversations, working out, being proactive, eating mood-boosting foods, and snapping back into the moment could help make a person happier.

But people are talking about suicide prevention - which Zimmerman said can be helpful.

And Moutier says when it comes to warning signs, it's important to look beyond the classic symptoms of depression and hopelessness. "It's unlikely that someone is necessarily going to admit to it if they weren't already reaching out to talk about it", she said.
