After a slow early June, the box office overall is now running around 6 percent ahead of where it was a year ago and will likely continue that growth next weekend when "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" launches stateside.

"The film shows the drawing power of the superhero genre, whether in the live action or animated realm", box office analyst Paul Dergarbedian says. The movie hit theaters on Wednesday, taking in $1.2 million, and was estimated to make between $5 and $8 million over its five-day debut; it wound up coming right above those expectations with $6.3 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $8.4 million.

As The Hollywood Reporter points out, "Incredibles 2" is not only the biggest-ever debut for an animated film (dethroning previous champ "Finding Dory", which enjoyed a $135M opening weekend), Pixar's latest is also the biggest debut in movie history for movie not rated PG-13.

Fellow Pixar sequel Finding Dory now holds the title with $135 million. The film opened Friday nationwide. The film boasts a coveted A+ CinemaScore, as well as a 94 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L Jackson reprise their voice-acting roles, Huck Milner, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener and Jonathan Banks join the cast.
