With streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal now dominating the market, YouTube Music comes in to offer access to its catalog of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that aren't available elsewhere.

YouTube Premium will be available for US$11.99 per month (US price) - US$2 more than the current price of YouTube Red.

Existing YouTube Red markets such as the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea will see YouTube Music launch on May 22nd. It's not just official artist videos either, as you can also stream any remixes or live versions of songs you can find on the video streaming service, something rival services can't offer. So, you are forced to subscribe to Google's music service if you want ad-free YouTube.

Google Play Music is expected to be gradually phased out as YouTube Music is introduced more globally. YouTube Music Premium is the ad-free version of the music streamer that allows you to listen to tunes in the background, and download tunes.

YouTube Music is free as long as you don't mind ads.

In a nutshell, the former is a rebranded Google Play Music with videos thrown in while YouTube Premium is YouTube Red with a new name. From what we know of YouTube Music at this time it doesn't seem to support uploading your own personal digital music collection, purchasing songs and albums outright, and there is no mention of podcast functionality.

YouTube Premium includes ad-free background and offline access to YouTube and YouTube Originals, on top of YouTube Music Premium. Spotify and Apple Music subscribers may be content with their chosen services for now, but if YouTube Music truly does become a legitimate contender in the streaming market, it will be hard to resist the allure of YouTube Premium for all the extra perks it offers. YouTube Music will have a personalized home screen that will dynamically adapt to provide recommendations based on your listening history. YouTube Music Premium will be available on a standalone basis for US$9.99 per month (US price). You will also still be able to access all your purchased music, uploads and playlists in Google Play Music, nothing will change.

But what exactly is YouTube Music?
