Due to be published today, the WHO's International Classification of Diseases (ICD) will now include "Gaming Disorder". Because the United Kingdom has a public health system that follows these guidelines, the National Health Service in Britain might now treat gaming disorder. "Gaming disorder has been added to the section on addictive disorders", the World Health Organization said in a statement.

In order for a video-gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behavior pattern must be of "sufficient severity" in order to result in major detrimental effects in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other vital areas of functioning.

According to the World Health Organization, the gaming behaviour and related features have to be observed in an individual over a period of 12 months for an official diagnosis to be considered.

Much like any other kind of addiction, they find it impossible to resist the urge to play games or to stop after they have been playing for more than what many would consider being a healthy period of time. The overwhelming majority of video game adepts are young, many in their teens.

"The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent", reads the WHO's classification of gaming disorder.

"Gaming disorder" has three main characteristics. "It is concerning to see the "gaming disorder" proposal in this draft despite significant opposition from the medical and scientific community".
