First lady Melania Trump touched down in McAllen, Texas, Thursday making a publicly unannounced and hastily planned trip to get a first-hand look at the crisis affecting immigrant families at the United States border.

Since becoming first lady, Trump has said she wants to champion helping children, yet has been for the most part vague about how exactly she intends to accomplish her goal. On the wall was a handpainted American flag and the children signed it.

First lady Melania Trump arrived unannounced in McAllen on Thursday morning to see for herself the conditions facing migrant children separated from parents under her husband's zero-tolerance policy.

Visiting another classroom, Mrs. Trump asked children where they were from, if they were friends and how long they'd been at the center where staff said children typically spend between 42 and 45 days. She wants to see what's real.

Her tour of a Border Patrol intake center and a facility holding about 60 migrant children ages 5 to 17 will put a spotlight on a crisis created by President Donald Trump's decision to press criminal charges against everyone caught crossing the border illegally. Officials have said they are working to reunite families as soon as possible but have provided no clear answers on how that will happen. But, she said, "we are waiting our turn, and hoping".

Trump's Communications Director Stephanie Grisham told reporters that the First Lady had suggested making the trip on Tuesday - othat *ends the Adminitration's policy of separating children and parents at the border.

Trump Signs Order to End Family Separation Policy
It is not immediately clear whether, or when, detained children will be reunited with their parents. But as The Washington Post reports , few people are predicting either House measure will pass .

The U.S. Conference of Mayors, a nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more, organized the trip prior to Wednesday's executive order, after unanimously passing a resolution condemning the separation of families. "She was on top of the situation before any of that came out", Grisham said.

In signing the executive order he used to reverse the separation policy on Wednesday, Trump cited his daughter and his wife.

But what matters here is the implication, accidental or not, that First Lady Melania Trump "really [doesn't] care" about what she's doing today - getting a firsthand look at the horrific and inhumane realities for children and families at the border.

"I'm here to learn about your facility and which I know you house children on a long-term basis", she continued. Her four former living predecessors, seemingly encouraged after Laura Bush authored a scathing opinion piece, followed with sharper commentary of their own condemning the family separations as shameful.

This is a woman who knows that every single move she makes in public will be scrutinized - her fashion especially.
