First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to Texas on Thursday to take a first-hand look at the border crisis that has detained more than 2,300 children under her husband's zero-tolerance immigration policy.

Trump, who works with personal stylist Hervé Pierre, often changes her clothing en route to a destination, so it's not known if she was alerted to the potentially offensive message on her jacket or if she had already planned to change into something else.

"She wanted to see everything for herself", Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told reporters travelling with her.

Then she wore it *again* when she deplaned back at Andrews Air Force Base after the trip - and after the wave of initial outrage.

The green, hooded military jacket had the words written graffiti-style on the back.

Melania Trump visited three classrooms, each time asking the children where they came from, their ages, how long they'd been at the center and their favorite subjects.
