England recorded their largest-ever victory in World Cup history on Sunday, demolishing Panama to reach the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup.

"It's wonderful, I'm extremely proud". Portugal, oddly, scored only one goal in the first half and six in the second - and then did not score again for the rest of the tournament, knocked out in the round of 16 by Spain.

England will now play Belgium in Kaliningrad on Thursday with the victor of that match advancing from the group in first place.

The team are growing into the competition, and it's not gone unnoticed that the past two World Cups have seen the tournament winners come from the nation where Pep Guardiola is coaching at the time. Tunisia were also knocked out. Panama are not at the level you expect, but you can only dispatch what's in front of you and England have been emphatic'. A header from a corner by John Stones, a penalty from Kane and a handsome strike from the edge of the box by Jesse Lingard set them on their way.

Lingard made it 3-0 in the 36th minute with a lovely strike from just outside the area before Stones nodded in his second and England's fourth from a cleverly worked free kick routine. Anibal Gody resorted to trying to wrestle Kane to the ground, only to concede a penalty that was converted by the Tottenham striker.

Sandor Kocsis, who finished with 11 goals in that year's tournament, had a hat trick and Ferenc Puskas and Peter Pelotas had two goals for eventual runners-up Hungary, who defeated West Germany 8-3 in their next game before incredibly losing 3-2 in the rematch in the final.
