Colombia captain Radamel Falcao celebrates after scoring his first World Cup goal in a 3-0 win over Poland.

Poland entered the World Cup ranked highest of the four teams in Group H at eighth but ended up being the first team out of contention for the knockouts with a lacklustre performance in their first two matches.

Falcao, who missed the 2014 World Cup because of a knee injury, made it 2-0 with a 70th-minute goal.

Barcelona defender Yerry Mina scored the opener, powering a header beyond Wojciech Szczesny five minutes before half-time to enliven the contest, and it was the creativity and industry of Juan Cuadrado and James Rodriguez that picked apart Poland's tightly stitched seams.

Senegal and Japan drew 2-2 earlier Sunday and lead the group with four points each.

The respite was brief and, on the next Colombia attack, Juan Quintero found Rodriguez lurking inside the box and the midfielder chipped a delightful cross into the danger area for Mina to head the ball into the net from point-blank range.

Colombia gradually settled in, though, with Quintero providing attacking width and Cuadrado proving risky with his subtle moves on the edge of the box.

With two losses after two games, Poland has zero points. Poland is the first European team to be knocked out of Russian Federation 2018.

The way they opened up the Polish defence for the killer second goal was fantastic, Quintero accepting a low ball from the right side with the softest of touches before delivering a ideal pass for Falcao to slip beyond Wojciech Szczesny with the outside of his boot.

Having survived that scare, Colombia came to life and Quintero's superb slide-rule pass presented Falcao with a one-on-one situation and he expertly guided the ball past Szczesny with the outside of his right foot to double his side's lead.

Lewandowski finally got a chance to score his first World Cup goal in the 58th minute but his first touch on the long ball was not his best and goalkeeper David Ospina smothered his shot.

"We lost against a very strong team and this is what we have to accept", said Poland coach Adam Nawalka.
