And James' switch is even more noteworthy as the best player in the NBA, having made all of the last eight NBA Finals - leading the Cavs to the last four nearly single-handedly.

James and the Cavaliers had been beaten in three out of four NBA Finals against the Warriors since 2015.

After much deliberation and anticipation, LeBron James spurned the Cleveland Cavaliers and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in a move that was widely expected.

That group will need time together to pose a threat to the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, to be sure.

The Sixers have the ability to offer James a $38.25 million annual maximum salary over four years, potentially partnering him with two of the NBA's best young stars, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. After bolting from Cleveland in 2010, he returned in an emotional homecoming four years later, determined to make the Cavs champions. ESPN reported he is signing a four-year deal that will be worth NZ$236 million.

The 33-year-old forward leaves the Cavaliers to join an iconic franchise that has won 16 National Basketball Association titles but is rebuilding after posting a losing record for five consecutive seasons.

LeBron James is now a Laker.

Durant, Paul and George all knew what they were going to do even before the NBA's moratorium - and the start of free agency - officially kicked in at 12:01am UST on Sunday.

The Lakers' legacy is something that appealed to James and it wasn't long after his announcement that he heard from Kobe Bryant, who won five titles during 20 seasons with Los Angeles.

However, James is the first superstar to land with the Lakers since free agency began this offseason, but that could be about to change. Previously, the star player was rumored to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, James also has his SpringHill Entertainment production company with Maverick Carter, and a move to Hollywood could make things all the more easier to keep track of.
