Google released Android P Developer Preview 4 (Beta 3) today for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. The new release "takes us very close to what you'll see in the final version of Android P", according to Google's Dave Burke, VP of Engineering, which is still on track to be pushed out later in the summer.

And a dark theme is here! As you might guess, therefore, there's a lot here for developers.

As Google says, the goal of the beta is really to allow developers to get their apps ready or the new features, while having the added benefit of a massive network of testers to help the firm stamp out flaws ahead of the public release.

Google still hasn't announced what the name of Android P will be, and it seems likely that the company will unveil it soon.

These features did not come to other devices, including the original Pixel, until Android 8.1.

Android P will bring support for the notch on the operating system, along with new features like smart notifications, a redesigned notifications shade, improvements to battery life, which will be driven by machine learning as well. It looks like Google will only roll out this feature with the final build of Android. The Android maker has also released factory images and OTA zip files to help users manually install the fresh security patch on their respective devices. We will keep you posted about the Android P Beta 3 OTA rollout. Those running the beta will get the app update, so the app will be tested on a variety of beta hardware. Still, with the number of pre-release betas dwindling ahead of the official launch, we won't have long to wait.
