Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption

Alongside Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz has been given 7 years jail term.

"The person they did choose to announce a verdict against was Nawaz Sharif". Sharif and his co-accused daughter, Maryam Nawaz, both of whom are in London since June monitoring the health of Sharif's wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, who is being treated for throat cancer, pleaded their inability to appear before the court.

"Voters will make their decision on July 25".

Accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir announced the verdict after several delays since morning.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecution team chief Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi provided details of the judgement. Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references, whereas Maryam and her husband Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference.

He also said that the verdict showed that Avenfield apartments were purchased with corruption money and were in ownership of Sharif family since 1993.

Hours before the verdict, Maryam's husband Safdar referred to it as a "funeral" for justice, the PML-N media office said in a statement.

The case centered on four apartments in an upscale area of London.

Nawaz's son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar was given a one year sentence. Sharif's two sons, who are British citizens, also ignored the repeated court summons.

The judgment runs into over 100 pages.

Strict security arrangements were made at the Federal Judicial Complex, where the court is located.

Amjad Pervez, counsel of Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam, argued that the law stipulates the presence of the accused when the verdict is read out Nawaz Sharif and his family are facing trial in three corruption cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which are Avenfield properties, Gulf Steel Mills and Al-Azizia Steel Mills.

The Sharif clan and their supporters have repeatedly denied the allegations of corruption, suggesting Nawaz is the victim of a conspiracy driven by the powerful military, which has ruled Pakistan for roughly half of its 70-year history.

During the trial, the NAB presented around 21 witnessed to prove that Sharif family can not justify the money trail to buy four apartments in Avenfield House, Park Lane, London.

Khan was a driving force behind Sharif's downfall, seizing on the 2016 Panama Papers' revelations that the then-prime minister's family had bought the London apartments using offshore companies.
