New wildfires hit California, burning homes

Farther south, a new wind-driven fire that started on Friday night local time burned at least 20 homes and threatened hundreds more in the hills above Goleta in Santa Barbara County, authorities said. He said Saturday the supertanker is undergoing final checks at McClellan Air Base outside Sacramento. Fire danger could prohibit rescuers from looking for anyone, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said. The aircraft can carry 19,200 gallons of water, retardant or suppressant.

"Temperatures at 8 a.m. were ridiculously over 100 degrees" in foothills near Forest Falls and many inland valleys, the National Weather Service said.

The plane first flew missions a year ago in California.

Firefighters have been working in tough conditions, enduring triple-digit temperatures and strong winds that have increased the fire threat.

In Colorado, nine major wildfires have razed through more than 216,000 acres, according to the Rocky Mountain Coordination Center. The company has been unable to get anyone out to that area yet to assess any potential damage, but they say that all tracks and structures will be inspected before trains begin running again. Evacuations and road closures were in place in that area as well.

A fire that jumped across Interstate 5 south of the OR border in California has closed the southbound lanes in that area, authorities said.

On Thursday night, California Governor Edmund G. Brown declared a state of emergency in Siskiyou County as residents were evacuated from their homes.

There are also multiples fires burning in California.

Dozens of blazes have broken out across the western United States, fanned by scorching heat, winds and low humidity in a particularly intense fire season.

The fire is now 8,000 acres and 5% contained, according to CAL FIRE.

At least one Hornbrook resident, however, has expressed frustration with the efforts of the local water utility company, which they say has not accepted offers from local volunteers willing to help restore clean water to the town.
