A Boots pharmacy in Amesbury was cordoned off, along with the Queen Elizabeth Gardens, the John Baker House in Salisbury, a supported living facility, and the Muggleton Road property in Amesbury, according to Wilshire Police.

The incident comes a few months after former Russian double-agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by the same nerve agent in Salisbury, just 5 miles east of Amesbury.

Salisbury District Hospital is now treating an Amesbury couple who British investigators believe has been infected by Novichok, a Soviet-developed compound from a group of nerve agents.

Detectives have pieced together a timeline of their movements on that day, and the previous one, when they visited Salisbury. A paper published in May in the scientific journal Clinical Toxicology noted that while a large dose of a nerve agent could kill a patient within minutes, "mild or moderately exposed individuals usually recover completely".

Earlier on Saturday, the Salisbury District Hospital spokesperson said other residents have come forward with similar health concerns but none required treatment.

The Russian Embassy accused the United Kingdom of trying to "frighten its own citizens".

The hospital did not say whether the unidentified officer might have been exposed to novichok.

Police say the two had been poisoned at their home and that their front door proved to have a high concentration Novichok, which was first developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s.

Novichok remains highly toxic for a considerable period of time, so even the tiniest trace remaining in a container picked up by the victims could account for their severe illness.
