Dissipated storm Beryl: Puerto Rico, Dominica still wary

The weakening Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to be an open trough by the time it approaches the territory.

The next hurricane advisory is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.

Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands - places still recovering from last year's deadly hurricanes - early in the coming week, National Hurricane Center forecasters said Sunday.

The storm that had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane has been losing power, but residents on islands hit hard by storms past year stocked up on food and water Saturday and prepared for possible damaging winds, rains and waves.

The storm was traveling west-northwest at 26 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, meteorologists said Sunday evening.

While Chris is expected to become a hurricane, it will stay offshore and head to sea, according to the storm center. Wind gusts of 40-60 miles per hour may produce isolated power outages and minor tree damage, mainly over Guadeloupe and/or Dominica.

As of 4 a.m. CDT Monday, Tropical Storm Chris was located about 200 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and was drifting south at 1 mph.

No coastal watches or warnings were in place for Chris as of Sunday.

Forecasters said conditions somewhat conducive for regeneration of a tropical cyclone are expected as Beryl is forecast to move across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic.

On the forecast track, the remnants of Beryl will move across the northeastern Caribbean Sea to the south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Monday.

Chris is churning up the seas along the coast, and large waves and deadly rip currents will be possible from North Carolina into the Mid-Atlantic states, the hurricane center said.

Beryl is likely to result in rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and amounts in some areas could reach 5 inches.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
