Donald Trump urged to avoid controversial Supreme Court pick

In the course of the 2016 election, Trump made changing the face of the U.S. supreme court a key campaign pledge that was instrumental in firing up his base of right-wing conservative voters.

The president is set to announce his Supreme Court nominee on Monday night.

A constitutional lawyer who met his wife while clerking for Chief Justice John Roberts, Hawley is in his element when he declares that McCaskill has "been wrong on every single court nominee since she has been running for the Senate or in the Senate".

While the U.S. Senate once required a 60-vote supermajority to overcome blocking tactics against Supreme Court nominees, the Republican majority changed the rules past year during the debate on Justice Neil Gorsuch. "But we're very close to making a decision". Of those, the shortlist is understood to have boiled down to four judges from various USA courts of appeal - Amy Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge.

The president whittled the list from 25 names, selected and vetted by the hard-right leaning Federalist Society, after meeting the candidates individually and by talking to White House aides, conservative lawmakers and Vice President Pence.

Leo said that it was impossible to predict the positions of any of the leading candidates for the seat on abortion.

"Let's say it's the four people", Trump said.

On Sunday there was no indication that he had yet made his decision, as speculation continued to swirl around the appointment.

The son of Indian-American immigrants, Thapar is the Nation's first Article III judge of South Asian descent.
