A crack team of foreign divers and Thai Navy SEALs guided the boys during a nine-hour operation through almost 4 km (2.5 miles) of sometimes submerged channels from where they have been trapped for more than a fortnight.

Writing in elegant Thai script, the boys urged their parents not to worry, adding that they hoped they wouldn't get too much homework after being rescued and couldn't wait to eat their favorite foods again.

Four were rescued over the weekend. The four rescued on Monday were rushed to a hospital to join their other rescued teammates in quarantine in case of infection.

The identities of the boys have not been confirmed by Thai authorities, but the first four boys brought out were aged 14 to 16 years old and the second group were 12 to 14 years old. But bursts of monsoon rain caused the water inside the cave to rise, leaving them trapped. They'll also be bringing back 3 Navy SEALS and a medic who have been in the cave with the team since the first day of the rescue efforts.

He posted video of divers escorting the pod during testing in a Los Angeles swimming pool.

Because of the heavy rains, which eventually eased in the afternoon, Narongsak said the decision had been taken to "not to waste time ... for the third planned mission".

The rescue effort has already claimed the life of one Navy Seal diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday.

"I insist that all 13 will be safe and sound", Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said at a news conference on Monday. Narongsak said experts told him the new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to 108 square feet.

People across Thailand cheered the rescue operation, including at the Mae Sai Prasitsart school where six of the trapped boys are students.

For the five still stranded, it's been 17 days since they've been outside.

Operations to pump water out of the cave went on despite heavy rain showers on Sunday and Monday.

Two more boys left the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex a short time later and were transferred to a medical facility on site, followed soon after by a fourth boy, according to the eyewitness, who is stationed at the entrance to the cave. Eight children have been rescued. "The equipment they brought to help us is not practical with our mission", the publication also quoted him as saying.
