It should be fine for basic computing - the focus of this machine - but don't expect a powerhouse.

Microsoft quietly launched its Surface Go today, a 2:1 that's aimed towards the education sector. You have to buy a Surface Go Type Cover (black) for $99 or a Signature Type Cover with Alcantara (Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Platinum) for $129. A version with 4G LTE broadband will be available later in the year. At first, it's hard to tell that the Go is actually a new member of the Surface family. This gold processor is the big question mark in the whole Surface Go idea as we are yet to see whether it will be powerful enough to drive demanding Windows applications. Part laptop (if you go for an optional keyboard) and part tablet, it's powered by a 7th gen Intel 4415Y, offers 4GB/8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB of storage.

The entry level model has 64gb of flash storage as well as 4GB of ram, but there will be a more expensive model that has 8gb of ram as well as 128gb of SSD storage.

The USB-C port can be used for plugging in monitors and other accessories, as well as for charging the Surface Go itself in a pinch. This means that the Surface tablet will possibly be available for purchase by this Friday. It does have a headphone jack, though.

In its standard configuration, the Surface Go will come with Windows 10 S, which only supports apps from the Microsoft Store. Just plain, old Windows 10.

Through some extensive demonstrations during our briefing on the new product, we've witnessed the Surface Go dock to a larger display via Surface Connect in seconds.

Unlike the iPad, the Surface keyboard attachment features a built-in trackpad that allows it to work just like a laptop. The front-facing camera of the Surface Go supports facial identification.
