Arsenal have completed the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira for a fee of around £25 million from Sampdoria.

"In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game", Emery was quoted as saying on Arsenal's official website.

Emery, preparing for his first season as Arsenal manager, said: 'We are delighted Matteo is joining us.

The player will not arrive until next month following a period of rest after the World Cup.

Arsenal are also close to completing another deal to land France Under-20 global Matteo Guendouzi.

Guendouzi recently emerged as a shock transfer target with the Mirror reporting over the weekend that Arsenal had agreed a £7m deal with Lorient to sign the young midfielder.

"Winning silverware, as I said, is very important to me and winning things here at Arsenal would be incredible".

He added that all of them were generally healthy and in good spirits, thanks to their "high immunity " from playing football. "Our thoughts are with the family of ex-Navy SEAL diver Saman Kunan who died after delivering the boys oxygen".

"I am used to coping with this kind of thing in the best possible way".

In Uruguay, the word 'garra' has been associated with Torreira - who admits his lion tattoo on his upper right arm represents the "strength and spirit we Uruguayans have inside" - but it is his versatility that has alerted the attention of Unai Emery.

The former Sunderland player posted a photo on Instagram signing his deal, writing that "today is the start of a new chapter in my life".

'I have met some special people along the way, big thanks to Sunderland and all coaches past and present for everything they have done for me. It makes me feel comfortable.

Emery will take charge of his first game since replacing Wenger when Arsenal XI face Boreham Wood in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. Despite his relatively diminutive stature, standing at five-feet-five-inches tall, he showed an impressive physicality with both Uruguay at the World Cup, where he featured in five matches, and last season at Sampdoria.

He has been handed the number 11 shirt for the 2018/19 campaign and will join up with the squad in early August.

The Belgian has just one year left on his contract and is expected to push for an exit after the World Cup.
