The source told Reuters that Amy Coney Barrett of IN, a Trump-appointed judge on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was still IN contention but that the Republican president had been asking more questions about the other two, who have more extensive judicial records.

To hear Republicans tell it, Brett Kavanaugh is a skilled and well-respected judge who reveres the Constitution. "His own writings make clear that he would rule against reproductive rights and freedoms, and that he would welcome challenges to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act".

"No president has ever consulted more widely, or talked with more people from more backgrounds to seek input about a Supreme Court nomination", Kavanaugh said of Trump.

"I look forward to thoroughly examining Judge Kavanaugh's record in the coming weeks as the Senate considers his nomination to replace Justice Kennedy", McCaskill said.

Kavanaugh thanked Trump for nominating him and expressed gratitude at the prospect of sitting where Kennedy did. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions. And they certainly want Trump's choice confirmed before the November election, when Democrats have a long-shot chance of retaking the Senate majority. Corker took a harder line. Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee. Agudah and other Orthodox groups favor rulings that would exempt religious groups and individuals from generally applicable laws that clash with their beliefs. Liberal advocacy groups are challenging Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to keep the Democrats united.

Ben Winkler, Washington director of the left-leaning, called Kavanaugh's nomination "a five-alarm fire for our fundamental rights and our democracy". CNN reported no Democrat lawmakers were in the East Room when Trump made his announcement.

Republicans will target three Democrats facing re-election in conservative states where Trump won big majorities in the 2016 election - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of in - to support Kavanaugh.

The nominee's fate may rest with two Republican senators who back abortion rights, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

The Federal Communications Commission this year repealed the Obama-era net neutrality rule last month, angering supporters who fear internet companies will now slow down speeds on certain sites in hopes of charging the companies that run those sites more money for faster access.

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace.

"Kavanaugh has proven to be a staunch conservative who has relied on originalism and textualism while serving on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit".

Because Murkowski and Collins are pro-choice, activists are focused on securing their votes as well as those of three Democrats from heavily Republican states - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - who are up for re-election this year and who will be pressured to support Kavanaugh. "He's also been a wonderful mentor and teacher to our students-not just to those who clerk for him, but those who meet with him during one of his many visits to Yale Law School".

Kavanaugh's views on presidential power and abortion are expected to draw particular attention in his confirmation hearing. But in a 2017 case involving a teen in immigration custody who was seeking an abortion, he wrote the dissenting opinion that would have given the government more say.

Tennessee's senators were complimentary of President Trump's pick for the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday night, but they withheld explicit support.

The glaring exception, of course, is administrative agencies, where Kavanaugh, in tune with Gorsuch and the conservative legal establishment, has sounded amenable to exercising aggressive judicial oversight over what he represents as merely an amalgam of unelected bureaucrats trampling on our cherished liberties.

Trump also met with Republican Sens. While that argument won't sway Republicans, their strategy could stiffen Democratic resolve to oppose the nominee. He is being accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence and former Sen. Jon Kyl would guide Trump's nominee through the grueling Senate process.
