Woolworths recalls frozen savoury rice mix as health precaution

The major supermarket joined Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi and Iceland last week in recalling more than 40 potential lethal products.

A person has died from a strain of listeria similar to one that triggered a recall of popular brands of frozen vegetables across Australia, but it is not possible to confirm a direct link to one of the products, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS) says.

Listeria is a type of bacteria that can live in soil, water, dust, animal faeces or other substances.

Woolworths has recalled its frozen savoury rice mix following a listeria outbreak alert in Europe. People who are immunocompromised like HIV/Aids patients, elderly people, pregnant women and children are affected by Listeriosis.

The listeria bacteria can develop into the rare but serious listeriosis illness.

Consumers are urged not to eat the products and to return to the place of purchase for a refund.

Earlier this year a listeria outbreak linked to contaminated rockmelons claimed six lives in NSW and Victoria. "The Frozen Savoury Rice Mix product is uncooked and frozen and so requires cooking before consumption", the retailer said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

The department said everyone should follow the recall advice issued on Monday by Food Safety Australia New Zealand.
