‘Game of Thrones’ earns a leading 22 Emmy Award nominations

As expected, "The Handmaid's Tale" was a major player at the 2018 Emmy Award nominations Thursday morning.

Leading the nominations in totals by platform were Netflix (112), leapfrogging last year's leader HBO, which scored 108.

Game of Thrones garnered a whopping 22 nominations - the most for any series this year.

Donald Glover's "Atlanta" was the top comedy series nominee the with 16 bids, poised to take advantage of the absence this time around of three-time victor "Veep". Others in the category include "black'ish", "Silicon Valley", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". Although it's up for top series honors, it drew only three supporting acting bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

Although season seven of Game of Thrones aired in summer 2017, due to the Emmys' eligibility cutoff, the HBO drama had to wait until this year to submit anything for consideration.

"Saturday Night Live, " riding high in the ratings with its relentless pillorying of the Trump administration, was rewarded with 21 nods.

HBO awards darling "Veep" was ineligible this year and its crown passed to "Atlanta", the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods. The 70th Emmy Awards will telecast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Sunday, September 17 (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) on NBC.
