Michael Avenatti calls Stormy Daniels arrest 'politically motivated'

According to Clifford's attorney, Michael Avenatti, Clifford was reportedly arrested for permitting a strip club patron to touch her while onstage. Early Thursday she remained in custody awaiting a determination of bail, Avenatti said.

Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, claims to have had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, which Trump has denied.

Reporter Tino Ramos said she refused to comment when asked.

But Michael Avenatti told NJ Advance Media by email that Daniels still plans to be at Lace in Wayne on August 9, where she will perform two shows. Per Ohio law, only family members are allowed to touch a nude or semi-nude dancer.

Just rcvd word that my client @StormyDaniels was arrested in Columbus Ohio whole performing the same act she has performed across the nation at almost a hundred strip clubs.

Avenatti said the arrest was a politically-motivated "sting operation". It reeks of desperation. Daniels was charged with three misdemeanor sex offenses for touching undercover police officers during her routine, and her attorney had some...interesting insight into their, shall we say, "investigation" of his client.

"She was arrested for allegedly allowing a customer to touch her while on stage in a non sexual manner!"

Undercover Columbus police officers also said they observed Daniels fondling the breasts of female patrons.

According to an article published past year in The Columbus Dispatch, the law, which also restricts the hours of operation for strip clubs and adult book stores, is rarely, if ever, enforced.

The Ohio strip club law prohibiting the touching of dancers, the Community Defense Act, was proposed by a Cincinnati-based conservative religious organization and approved in 2007.

Avenatti followed up with tweets announcing his intention to fight the charges.

'This was an absolute setup, ' he said. "As a result of what happened last night, I will unfortunately be unable to go forward with tonight's scheduled performance. I deeply apologize to my fans in Columbus".

Daniels, using Avenatti as her lawyer, is suing Trump and Cohen over the alleged non-disclosure agreement, trying to free herself from the deal.

She is hoping to have the non-disclosure agreement thrown out on the grounds that it is not valid because Trump never signed it.
