New housing minister to be appointed as Raab made Brexit Secretary

Former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe has warned that a new Brexit policy rolled-out by British Prime Minister Theresa May is unacceptable. "And that's a unsafe strategy at this time".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mr Johnson and Mr Davis had abandoned a "sinking ship", shattering the "illusion of unity" initially surrounding the Chequers plan. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

Ministers gathered for a retreat at the premier's country residence, Chequers, on Friday for talks called at short notice, and mobile phones had to be left outside.

Mr Varadkar, although cautious, and probably even skeptical, about the likelihood of the rest of the European Union accepting her compromise Customs plan said she had scored a "real political success".

The son of a Czech-born Jewish refugee who fled the Nazis in 1938, Mr Raab was brought up in Buckinghamshire and took a law degree at Oxford University before switching to Cambridge for his Master's.

Mr Davis said he told Mrs May at Chequers that he was going to be the "odd man out in this" as the latest stage of the Brexit strategy was agreed.

"I think perhaps we are now entering into that space", he said.

"What we want to do now is to bring the negotiating progress forward", she said.

Britain voted for Brexit in June 2016, but May has so far been unable to present a common position to Brussels on what she wants because of deep divisions in her government.

A bill enacting the decision to leave the European Union becomes law on June 26, 2018, following months of debate and after receiving the formal assent of Queen Elizabeth II.

"We need to rise to the challenge and grasp the opportunities" of Brexit, said Raab, adding that the policy represented a "balance".

"Choosing not to sign up to certain rules would lead to consequences for market access, security co-operation or the frictionless border, but that decision will rest with our sovereign parliament, which will have a lock on whether to incorporate those rules into the United Kingdom legal order".

After the cabinet meeting, May tweeted that she was "looking ahead to a busy week".

Only days after it appeared the Cabinet had finally agreed a Brexit stategy, Mr Davis gave the bombshell news that he was walking away.

Brexit-backing MPs, including leading eurosceptic Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg, will also seek to force her hand by submitting amendments to a trade bill being debated in the House of Commons next week. "At least half a dozen people made that point and the prime minister responded, too - what is good for the country is a Conservative government".

"I'm also committed to continuing the important work of supporting those affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy and ensuring people are safe, and feel safe in their homes". "It's more important to do what you have promised the British electorate than stick by lines in the sand". Her spokesman said the cabinet had discussed the publication of a "white paper" policy document on Britain's future ties with the European Union and stepping up preparations for any no-deal outcome to the negotiations with Brussels.
