Fake Twitter users: Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown

Twitter initially warned that its culling of fake followers would affect about 6% of all follows, so Perry actually may have got off lightly.

However, some of Twitter's biggest users, including Trump, saw huge drops in the numbers of their followers Thursday after the purge, Variety reported.

Since the above tweet was published on Thursday evening, Lewis's follower count has dropped further to 363,000.

"Over the years, we've locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behavior", Gadde explained.

Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform.

Social blade, a software that helps track social media stats, threw interesting insights into how politicians fared after Twitter's war on fake followers.

Since Twitter started purging locked accounts on Thursday, the tweeter-in-chief has lost 300,000 followers.

Twitter says for an average user, the follower count is likely to drop by 4 but for those having over thousands of followers the effect can be quite significant as is the case with Modi.

Renowned bloggers Cyprian Nyakundi and Xtiandela were the top losers in the country-both registering a decline in followership by a whooping half a million.

Union minister Smriti Irani, who has, of late, been lying low on Twitter, lost close to 40,000 followers (8.19 million) while minister without portfolio Arun Jaitley was down by over 50,000 followers (13 million). He also added that the new protections policy has helped Twitter to prevent more than 50,000 fake signups per day.

The Twitter crackdown has cost former President Barack Obama millions of followers.
