US President Donald Trump has published a letter from Kim Jong-un, in which North Korea's leader voices hopes for a "new future" in bilateral relations.

This latest incident comes shortly after Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang resulted in North Korea accusing Pompeo of making a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for nuclearization".

While the summit represented a major thaw in relations, US sanctions on North Korea, among the most stringent in the world, will remain in place until the Kim regime implements "final, fully verified denuclearization", US State Secretary Mike Pompeo said last week.

Though the secretary of state described the talks as "productive" after they concluded, North Korea's Foreign Ministry later released a statement that criticized the "regrettable" US negotiating style.

Other speculation is that North Korea was discomforted with the way it was portrayed by the US media _ as trying to make money from the war remains.

Trump's comments came just hours after North Korean officials failed to show up at a planned meeting Thursday with their USA counterparts to discuss the repatriation of the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean war.

Mr. Trump repeatedly touted that he shared a positive relationship with Mr. Kim, despite North Korean officials criticizing the U.S.in recent weeks. North Korea said Saturday it was seeking the "earliest start of the working-level talks" on the recovery of USA remains. "Great progress being made".

At high-level talks last week, North Korea and the US confirmed they are still poles apart on the next steps to be taken in the process.

Though Mr. Trump claimed on June 13 that North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat, just a day after his meeting with Mr. Kim, experts are not sure if North Korea is following through on the deal.

There were reports that North Korea had, rather than dismantled its nuclear programme, satellite images showed that it was actually upgrading its nuclear facilities.

North Korean officials did not attend a planned meeting with Americans to discuss the return of USA soldiers' remains, officials have said.

"Midday today they contacted us and offered to meet on Sunday", Ms Nauert said in a statement. Roughly 5,300 U.S. troops presumed to have been killed in the Korean war are unaccounted for. Trump agreed to provide "security guarantees" to North Korea and both countries agreed to renew relations.

Meanwhile evidence is piling up that North Korea is still working on its nuclear weapons.

But Pyongyang warned that the future of the peace process was being jeopardised by "unilateral and gangster-like" United States demands.
