U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of Russia's Nord (North) Stream 2 gas pipeline project was aimed at promoting sales of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. Dmitry Peskov said the United States objections to the new pipeline deal between Russian Federation and Germany are unfair.

Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has informed the U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry about the proposal of the EC for correcting the EU gas directive in connection with the discussions on Nord Stream 2.

"The president is pretty straightforward about what he believes and he thinks Nord Stream 2 is not in the European Union's best interest and my bet is he'll be more than happy to tell President Putin that straight to his face", said Perry.

The United States, for a number of geopolitical reasons, is vehemently objecting to the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Trump's statement marked an escalation of a USA campaign to talk down Russian gas supplies to Europe in an attempt to push the US energy sector instead.

"We are supposed to be protecting you from Russian Federation, but why are you paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation for energy?"

"When it comes to Nord Stream, Canada has significant concerns about that project", she said.

Freeland also went out of her way not to overstate the newfound simpatico with the Trump administration on this one issue, saying Canada has imposed sanctions on Russian Federation "in close collaboration with our European and US allies".

"We discussed it with Ukraine", Freeland said.

"Regular maintenance is necessary to operate the Nord Stream twin pipeline safely, efficiently and reliably".

"For decades Russian Federation has shown and continues to show it is a reliable supplier of energy security to Europe", Peskov added.

Poland's foreign minister, Jacek Czaputowicz, also welcomed Trump's comments, pointing out that "some countries are too close" and that the gas pipeline would help to fund the Russian military.
