The leader of Ontario's Opposition said Friday that Doug Ford's decision to repeal Ontario's modernized sex-ed curriculum and replace it with a 20-year-old version was a move to please social conservatives and one that would hurt the province's children.

It did not introduce major new promises but instead highlighted key pledges from Ford to conduct a line-by-line audit of all government spending, pull out of the cap-and-trade system and fight "oppressive" taxes, including the imposition of a federal carbon price.

Megan Houston, a mother of three - aged two, four and 21 - said it will affect how she talks to her younger children about sex, mental health and other subjects that were addressed in the newer curriculum. During the election, Ford promised to cut the middle class tax rate from 9.15 per cent to 7.32 per cent, but the plan would not be implemented until 2020-2021.

The government will focus on putting everyday workers and families first.

Both the sex-ed and math curriculums now in Ontario schools were described as "failed ideological experiments in the classroom" by former Premier Kathleen Wynne's government. The Government for the People will also send a message to the world that Ontario is open for business, and it will back up that message by lowering taxes and reducing regulatory burdens.

The sex-ed curriculum will be replaced with one that is based on "real" consultations with parents, the speech says.
