WIMBLEDON, England-After a remarkable run to the Wimbledon final, Serena Williams fell short to Angelique Kerber, one of the fastest-and most relentless-women in tennis.

That Kerber's gritty resilience would pose Williams some questions was anticipated; what was wholly unexpected was she would outplay her opponent, who would have equalled Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams had she won, so overwhelmingly.

Kerber made Serena look sluggish winning more than 2/3rds of her service points, particularly doing well on the second serve, and also breaking Serena 4 times in the match, compared to just a lone break for Williams.

In the first Wimbledon final for 41 years to feature two women 30 or older, Serena was cheered on by her friend the Duchess of Sussex, golf legend Tiger Woods and Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton.

The 11th seed took advantage of an error-strewn performance by the seven-times champion to become the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graf in 1996.

Serena and Meghan have been close for years, with the 36-year-old tennis ace even attending the royal wedding with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, back in May. Kerber is now behind only Serena and Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova for career Grand Slam titles among active WTA players.

But it was all about Kerber as she absorbed everything Williams threw at her and counter-punched in very effective fashion. "I think that helps me also to being a little bit relaxed today".

"I was really happy to get this far", Williams said after the match.

The flight, later on, reached its cruising altitude of 10,000 meters (32,800 feet). The move takes bad airline service to new heights, terrified passengers said.

She continued: "I always enter a tournament just coming to do my best". Perhaps more impressive was this: She broke Williams in 4 of 9 service games.

"I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it, to be honest". So I don't get to be with her the full day, but a pretty good chunk out of the day.

"I knew I had to play my best tennis against a champion like Serena", Kerber said.

As for Kate and Meghan... what a ideal day out!

Williams was supported by several celebrity friends at Centre Court. Williams returned to the tour in March, making limited appearances without much success.

As Williams said after her semi-final victory against Julia Goerges, there was nothing normal about her being in a 30th grand slam singles final 10 months after giving birth to daughter Olympia and suffering life-threatening complications.

The final started more than two hours late, because they had to wait for the end of Novak Djokovic's five-set victory over Rafael Nadal in a men's semifinal that was suspended the night before.
