She then made the semis at Wimbledon in 2012, before having to wait until her 2016 Australian Open breakthrough to again get past the quarter-finals of a major. This final came just 10½ months after the 36-year-old American gave birth to a daughter and dealt with a serious health scare.

Germany's Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams of the US hold their trophies after Kerber won the women's singles final. The sheer presence of Serena has been so overpowering that I can not but wonder whether the exodus of top seeds was a sense of ominous foreboding that accompanies a champion of her stature. She still has to wear compression sleeves and tights while playing on the court.

"I knew that I had to play my best tennis against a champion like Serena", Kerber said.

Serena didn't enjoy a good start to the ongoing season as she withdrew from Australian Open and struggled in the Sunshine tournaments before quitting ahead of the French Open quarter-final due to complications of childbirth.

But, back to her best on the grass at Wimbledon, she needed only 11 winners and one ace to deny an oddly nervous Serena, who contributed to her own downfall with a whopping 24 unforced errors, compared to only five from Kerber.

So far this tournament Williams has progressed serenely and dropped just the one set against Camila Giorgi in the quarter-final.

But if she emerges victorious, she will equal Margaret Court's grand slam singles record as she claims her eighth Wimbledon title. "This is literally just the beginning, literally just the beginning". I think that was the right decision, to put the match before us because they have tomorrow the biggest final. "You will have your next Grand Slam, and you will have it soon I am sure", she said after her win.

It seems unfair to Angelique to call this an upset, but considering how Serena played during the rest of the tournament, the loss does seem shocking.
