The twin mobile gantries at Launch Complex 17 (LC-17) were imploded Thursday morning (July 12), toppling the oldest remaining launch pad structures at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The site hadn't been used for a mission since 2011, but it did the job for more than 50 years launch everything from the earliest rockets to modern day boosters.

Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith of the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base gave the all-clear for the demolition, according to a Facebook post from the base.

"Keep your fingers crossed that I won't mess this up", Monteith joked before initiating the charges just after 7 a.m.

The almost 60-metre-tall towers came tumbling down after explosives were activated, sending them falling in opposite directions at the US Air Force base in Florida. The last launch in Launch Complex 17 took place nearly seven years ago when the United Launch Alliance's Delta II rocket lifted off with lunar probes, according to Click Orlando.

"With 61 years of history and 325 launches, it's been a pretty incredible piece of the space community for many years", he explains. The two pads ended up as the launch site for dozens of Delta rockets over the past many decades.

The complex consisted of two launch pads, Pad 17A and Pad 17B.
