Defender Alderweireld started just three league games in 2018 following his return from a lengthy lay off due to a hamstring injury.

Alderweireld was in action at the World Cup in Russian Federation until the final weekend of the competition as Roberto Martinez's men finished third. I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play - for whatever reason - was unjustified.

"I wanted to show that I'm still Toby, same as in November".

Nine of Pochettino's players were competition in the final weekend of the World Cup in Russian Federation. I immediately had a good feeling.

"To bring them back before that would be "OK, I have you for the first match of the season, but maybe I don't have you in three or four months".

This latest update will be welcome news for Spurs fans, who will be even more pleased with a recent interview that Alderweireld gave, during which he declared that his current club are "going the right way".

Alderweireld has been linked with a move to several European clubs and the full-back says he is uncertain about his future although he is planning to start next season at Tottenham.

"I think three weeks is the minimum they need, which means that they're going to be back in the week when the Premier League starts, which means they're not ready to start the Premier League, which is I think hard to understand, where we could have one more week to prepare everybody".
