U.S. President Donald Trump says in an interview that President Vladimir Putin is "probably" a "ruthless person", in remarks made ahead of his summit with the Russian leader. "I go in with low expectations", he said.

Asked whether he would press his Russian counterpart to send to the USA members of the Russian military intelligence agency accused of hacking Hillary Clinton's failed presidential campaign, he said: "Well, I might".

The United States has no extradition treaty with Moscow and can't compel Russian Federation to hand over citizens.

Trump has said that, he will raise the subject of 12 Russians indicted for alleged hacking during the 2016 U.S. election while Russia has denied the hacking allegations.

"That's what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye to eye with President Putin and ask him about it", Bolton said.

After interviewer Piers Morgan described North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a "ruthless dictator", Trump agreed and said he deals with many leaders who are "pretty ruthless people".

Trump did manage to rope China and Russian Federation into his remarks about America's foes, but defended their inclusion as being "competitive", and not necessarily based on being bad countries.

But after being given the idea by his interviewer, President Trump said: "Certainly I'll be asking about it".

Trump and Putin meeting in Helsinki
This was after he tweeted earlier that Washington's "foolishness and stupidity" was the reason for bad relations. The pair were scheduled to meet one-on-one for just 90 minutes, but appeared to do so for around two hours.

In a separate letter sent last Monday, leading foreign-policy Democrats also urged Trump to hold Putin accountable for Russia's destabilization efforts, including election meddling.

On Friday, Trump suggested that the indictments were more embarrassing than helpful. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe".

As he has done before, Trump attacked the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian election interference.

"We have to assume - and if we have proof that [the Russians] did [interfere], which it sounds like we did - we should now spend our time protecting ourselves instead of sort of having this witch hunt on the president", Paul told CNN's Jake Tapper. "We have some very real issues".

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!"

"We have always said that we need dialogue with Russian Federation".

Mueller has secured indictments against several former Trump campaign aides, including campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and former White House national security advisor Michael Flynn.
