Matthew Rowley told the BBC that his brother Charlie, who is seriously ill in hospital, said he had picked up the perfume bottle containing the chemical weapon.

Police investigating the incident have so far failed to substantiate the brother's claims about the perfume bottle.

Police have not been able to establish whether the Novichok that Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess were exposed to was from the same batch used against the Skripals but have said that a possible connection is their main line of inquiry.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, died on July 8, just over a week after being exposed to Novichok near the city of Salisbury where Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were struck down with the same poison in March.

Before the bottle was found, police said they suspected the Amesbury victims had become contaminated with Novichok by handling a container, and they had no reason to think the two were targeted deliberately.

However, the Kremlin has denied responsibility and instead insists the British Government is behind the attack.

He said he wants the people responsible "to get what they deserve".

Traces of the nerve agent were found in a small bottle in the Amesbury home of Mr Rowley, 45, who remains in a serious but stable condition at Salisbury District Hospital.

"However, we can not guarantee that there isn't any more of the substance left", said Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing.

The Metropolitan Police are still investigating where the bottle came from and if it was from the same batch of poison that was used to target the Skripals.
