68% of Republicans approve Trump's handling of summit, poll finds

President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Thursday echoed President Donald Trump's insistence that Russian Federation did not seek to aid his White House bid in 2016 - a claim directly contradicting the USA intelligence community's assessment of the Kremlin's election interference, according to an article published by New York Daily News.

During a post-summit news conference on Monday, the president seemed to favor Putin's denials over the US intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the election in order to benefit Trump.

President Donald Trump on Thursday insisted he has been tough on Russian Federation, describing former President Barack Obama as a "pasty" for the Kremlin.

A White House meeting would be a dramatic extension of legitimacy to the Russian leader, who has always been isolated by the West for activities in Ukraine, Syria and beyond and is believed to have interfered in the 2016 presidential election that sent Trump to the presidency.

Trump had praised the proposal on Monday as an "incredible offer" and Sanders later described it as an "interesting idea" that was being discussed internally.

On July 16, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had the first full-scale meeting in Helsinki. Trump explained that when he said he saw no reason why Russian Federation "would" interfere, he meant to say he saw no reason why it "would not" be Russian Federation who interfered in the United States elections.

A Defense Department spokesman told me "we don't now have anything" when asked about Russian Maj.

"The Russian effort to influence the 2016 presidential campaign is just one tree in a growing forest", he said.

On the House side, Republicans on Thursday voted against a Democratic effort to increase spending on election security, arguing that Congress has already given states enough money for election security.

"We discussed lots of great things for both countries, frankly".
