Several tornadoes hit Iowa, at least 17 injured

At least 17 people were left injured after nightmare tornadoes ripped through Iowa, leaving the cities of Marshalltown, Pella and Bondurant in a path of destruction.

Vermeer Corp. Vice President of Operations Vince Newendorp told The Associated Press the east half of the company's campus, which includes seven manufacturing buildings, sustained extensive damage. Additional funnel clouds were reported further north near Iowa Falls.

Marshalltown, about 55 miles northeast of Des Moines, was one of the hardest hit communities as a powerful tornado ripped through the downtown area, causing "catastrophic damage" to many buildings, including City Hall, and prompting a state of emergency. A state of emergency was declared. 6 News will update this story as weather and damage reports continue to come in. Varcoe said all 40 of its patients were being transferred to the health system's hospitals in Waterloo and Grundy Center.

Police say only minor injuries have been reported as a result of the storm. Officials said everyone should stay off the streets unless they have an emergency.

According to CNN affiliate WOI, another tornado damaged houses in Bondurant, about 10 miles from Des Moines.

None of the patients are in critical condition, hospital spokeswoman Laura Rainey said.

Over 35 million Americans are at risk for severe weather Friday, which is expected to be concentrated in the South and Midwest, including major cities like Birmingham, Alabama; Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis and Detroit.
