Fetus found in bathroom of American Airlines flight out of Charlotte

According to CNN, during a regular early morning cleaning service on an American Airlines plane, a cleaning crew found "what appears to be a fetus" in one of the bathrooms.

Fetus was thought to be 5 months along.

Port Authority police officers surrounded the jet on the tarmac Tuesday after the plane was removed from the hangar, according to photos from the scene. It was the Airbus A321's only flight of the day.

The Medical Examiner issued a statement: "we're investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane".

The cleaning crew immediately contacted their manager, who in turn contacted law enforcement, Franco said.

LaGuardia also responded to an upset Twitter user with further explanation: "We're delayed due to the medical needs of a customer".

"As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation", an American Airlines spokesman told CBS News. "We will release cause and manner of death upon determination." .

The Queens District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.
