A strong natural disaster hit Indonesia's Lombok island on Thursday, causing some buildings to collapse.

"Our latest update is that 319 people died", said Indonesia's chief security minister Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, adding that rescue efforts were ongoing and complicated by aftershocks. "People are still traumatized". Local authorities reported it to be a 6.2-magnitude quake.

It said it didn't have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Survivors of the quake have also been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks, including a shallow 5.9-magnitude quake Thursday which caused people to flee evacuation shelters crying and screaming.

Several agencies have been releasing higher death toll figures than the 131 announced on Wednesday by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, which has a coordinating role in disaster relief. Displaced residents living in shelters rushed out of their temporary homes, fearing more destruction to structures already weakened from the previous two quakes.

The aftershock comes just four days after a devastating 6.9-magnitude quake struck Lombok, which relief agencies said had wiped out entire villages in the worst-hit regions in the north and west.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.
