Russian says Nato admission of Georgia could trigger ‘conflict’

Tbilisi and its Western partners condemned the move as an "illegal occupation of Georgian soil" and the first time a sovereign state's borders were changed in Europe through military force since the end of World War Two.

The prime minister recalled that the 2008 armed conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia, which also involved Russian Federation, "was not inevitable" and "could have been prevented".

Meanwhile, foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland - all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members - will pay a visit to Georgia's capital of Tbilisi for official talks. In March 2017, Visa Free Travel for short term stays entered into force for Georgian citizens.

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini assured Georgia on Tuesday (12 June) that ten years after Russia's occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the European Union has not given up seeking a "true solution" to the conflict.

The EU welcomes the package of proposals "A Step to a Better Future" of the Georgian government that can benefit the citizens living on both sides of the Administrative Boundary Lines by facilitating trade, education and mobility.
