West Nile Virus confirmed in North Iowa

Health officials say the patient was infected with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease.

The most up-to-date information from Public Health Ontario shows there have been three reported human cases of West Nile virus, two in Toronto and one that is travel-related.

The West Nile virus program includes larviciding at catch basins.

According to an announcement from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office, the rates of mosquitoes carrying West Nile have been much higher this year. In a small number of cases, especially among those with pre-existing medical risk factors, West Nile can be life threatening.

"Controlling an epidemic of WNV infection is a community effort that calls upon residents to take preventative measures to reduce exposure", Ganesh Shivaramaiyer, DCHHS' interim director, said. It's now been detected in Ada County. The first probable case of the virus in 2018 was reported in Allegheny County in late July.

They are most active at dawn and dusk and will bite humans as well as other mammals and birds.
