Romanian world number one Simona Halep beat American Sloane Stephens in three sets to win the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

"If you told me this two weeks ago I would not have believed it", Nadal said in his on-court interview.

Tsitsipas fired an ace for an 8-7 lead and converted his third match point when Anderson's return sailed long.

Nadal's Toronto win was notable.

"It shows the level we are playing right now, we had four good wins and three over top doubles teams who play week in week out together".

Soon after his triumph, Rafa announced that he won't be participating in the next ATP Masters 1000 event - Cincinnati Open. "This trophy means a lot after playing my first Masters 1000 final".

He said he stayed positive in the tiebreaker, knowing one or two points can make the difference, and reflected on how significant an achievement it is to make the final of a Masters event at such a young age.

"Credit to them they played better than us today".

The pair were meeting for the first time since January's Australian Open quarter-final, when Cilic benefited from Nadal's retirement in an absorbing battle.

Nadal's punishing pace and consistency set him up to serve for the match, but he tightened up and it proved costly.

The Athens native did well to serve out at love in the first game but Nadal took over as he broke back in each of his next two chances before sealing the opening set in 34 minutes when Tsitsipas sent a routine forehand into the net.

He beat World No. 6 Kevin Anderson, eighth-ranked Dominic Thiem, World No. 10 Novak Djokovic and German No. 3 Alexander Zverev earlier in the week.

That moment unsettled Cilic and while he continued to fight until the very end, he never reached the heights of the first set as Nadal broke to secure a semi-final clash against Karen Khachanov.

"It's been an wonderful week for me", the finalist said. "Obviously I'm sad I lost, but losing to the number one player isn't too bad". The South African had a match point of his own at 7-6, but Tsitsipas came through with a brilliant backhand crosscourt victor to pull even.

It was still an incredible week for Tsitsipas, who will move from 27th to 15th when the new world rankings are released Monday.

He improved to 4-0 in Rogers Cup final appearances.
