England rugby star Cipriani charged with assaulting police

The 30-year-old, known away from the sport for his relationships with Kirsty Gallacher, the television presenter, and Kelly Brook and Katie Price, the glamour models, was accused of common assault, larceny, resisting arrest and being disorderly on licensed premises in Jersey.

Announcing his arrest in a statement on Wednesday evening, his team said: 'Gloucester Rugby are aware of an incident involving Danny Cipriani in the early hours of Wednesday morning following an incident at a St Helier nightclub.

English rugby outhalf Danny Cipriani has been arrested and charged by police after reportedly attacking a police officer at a nightclub.

Two other charges - larceny and being disorderly on licensed premises - were dropped.

Cipriani was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £250 in compensation to a police officer after she was left with a bruised arm and marks on her chin and neck.

"We will deal with it in a robust but balanced way but based purely on the facts", the club added in a statement posted on their website.

He had been expected to make his first appearance for Gloucester in a pre-season friendly against Ulster on Saturday.

Cipriani signed for Gloucester earlier this year after a successful spell with their rivals Wasps which had sparked both a nomination for Premiership player of the season and a surprise recall to the national squad.

"He was arrested in the early hours of this morning [Wednesday] following an incident in Mulcaster Street in St Helier".

Following his return for England, Cipriani vowed to "do everything I can" to remain in the worldwide set-up.

Last week he vowed to "do everything I can" to remain in the England set-up after making his first Test match start in 10 years during the summer tour to South Africa.
