‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin Dies at the Age of 76

"Franklin's official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin's oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute", the publicist said.

Calling it one of the darkest moments of their lives, Franklin's family said they were unable to find the appropriate words to express the pain in their hearts.

Singer Alexander O'Neal told BBC News: "It meant a lot to me coming from the barriers that we had to overcome for race and everything else during that era, and time when she was such a success and became such a rock icon, a real icon".

She performed "Natural Woman" at the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2015 in a tribute to songwriter Carole King, who wrote the song. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 - the first female performer to ever receive the honour. Because she grew up with her father in the church.

As an unmarried teenager, Franklin gave birth to a son at 13 and another two years later.
